BBS UK is a registered charity, primarily supporting those with Bardet-Biedl Syndrome, their families and/or carers.
Summary Details
Organisation Type Charity (remote-based)
NHS Contract Size £200,000
Baseline Year 2025
Annual Emissions (2025) 1.71 tCO₂e
Net Zero Target Year 2050
Net Zero Champion Tonia Hymers

1. Commitment to Achieving Net Zero

We are committed to achieving Net Zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, in alignment with the NHS Net Zero Supplier Roadmap and the UK Government’s Procurement Policy Note (PPN 06/21). As a supplier to NHS England, we recognise our responsibility to reduce our environmental impact and contribute to a more sustainable health and care system.

2. Baseline Emissions Footprint

We are a small charity with:

  • A team of 9 staff (equivalent to 6 full-time employees)
  • All staff working remotely from home
  • 7 staff attending monthly in-person site visits (hospital, school, home etc)
  • A documented policy prioritising public transport

We established our baseline emissions in 2025 using activity-based estimates in line with NHS guidance for small suppliers. Our emissions fall entirely under Scope 3, which includes:

  • Staff commuting and business travel in private vehicles/public transport
  • Homeworking emissions
  • Purchased goods and services
Emissions Source Scope Estimated Annual Emissions (tCOe)
Homeworking (6 FTE) Scope 3 1.2
Staff travel – train (5 staff) Scope 3 0.03
Staff travel – Staff Car – Toyota Prius Scope 3 0.09
Staff travel – Staff car – Vauxhall Mokka Scope 3 0.39
Total Estimated Emissions   1.71

3. Emissions Reduction Measures

As a home-based workforce, many emissions fall outside our direct control. However, we aim to influence and support household behaviours to reduce environmental impact, with the following measures:

  • Public transport is the default for all NHS-related travel. Staff may use their car when certain conditions are met (Finance Policy).
  • We favour suppliers that demonstrate sustainable practices.
  • We minimise printing and physical meetings, using digital tools wherever possible.

Going forward, we aim to:

  • Provide guidance on energy-efficient homeworking
  • Promote low-energy devices
  • Share resources for switching to renewable energy tariffs.
  • Explore incentives for lower-emission travel

4. Governance and Reporting

  • This plan is developed in line with the requirements of Procurement Policy Note (PPN) 06/21 and NHS England’s Evergreen Supplier Assessment framework.
  • Our Net Zero Corporate Champion is Tonia Hymers, responsible for NHS carbon compliance.
  • We will publish annual updates and participate in the Evergreen Supplier Assessment when applicable.
  • This plan will be reviewed every 12 months or sooner in response to operational changes or NHS guidance.

5. Publication

This plan will continue to made available on our website.

6. Methodology Summary

1. Homeworking - Scope 3
  • Assumption: 6 FTE × 0.2 tCO₂e per year (average per home worker)
  • = appx 1.2 tCO₂e annually
2. Clinic Travel – Public Transport (5 staff)
  • 5 staff × 12 trips/year × 100km = 6000km
  • Emissions factor (train average): ~0.05 kg CO₂e/km
  • = appx 0.03 tCO₂e annually
3. Clinic Travel
  • 12 months = 507 miles (based on 6mths Jan 2025 Jun 2025)
  • Toyota Prius: ~0.18 kg CO₂e/mile
  • = 91.26 kg CO₂e = ~0.09 tCO₂e
4. Clinic Travel
  • 12 months = 1233 miles (based on 6mths Jan 2025 Jun 2025)
  • Vauxhall Mokka (older petrol/diesel): ~0.32 kg CO₂e/mile
  • = 394.56 kg CO₂e = ~0.39 tCO₂e
